Big Math Changes:

We are pleased to announce a significant enhancement to the HEED Math program, one that represents a substantial evolution in our pedagogical approach and commitment to student success.

Beginning in 2026-2027, the program will transition from a single weekly meeting to two dedicated sessions per week. This strategic expansion of instructional time constitutes a major restructuring of the course format, designed to provide a more robust and sustained learning environment for all participants. This change is grounded in established principles of mathematics education: mastery of algebra and related foundational skills flourishes through regular, deliberate practice and iterative reinforcement.  By doubling the frequency of class meetings, we create essential space for deeper conceptual engagement, more comprehensive problem-solving, and progressive scaffolding of knowledge—without increasing the overall workload or introducing undue pressure.

Students and parents will benefit from:

Expanded opportunities for in-depth questioning and individualized guidance from instructors, ample time to engage with new material, receive timely feedback, and solidify understanding before advancing to subsequent topics.

Structured, incremental support that fosters confidence, reduces cognitive overload, and promotes long-term retention and proficiency.  This adjustment reflects our ongoing dedication to cultivating an environment where every student can achieve genuine competence, feel well-prepared for future mathematical challenges, and take pride in measurable academic growth.

It marks a deliberate and forward-thinking step in elevating the overall quality and efficacy of the HEED Math program..

There are five main reasons why Saxon Math produces such strong long‑term results:

1. Practice of Basic Facts and Mental Math

2. Problem‑Solving Practice

3. New Concepts Introduced in Increments

4. Lesson Practice for New Concepts

5. Problem Sets Reviewing Previously Taught Concepts

MATH 5 (NEW)

Mrs. Brittnye Arthur

Course Description:

Math 5 is designed for families seeking to ensure their students build a strong, confident foundation in Math before advancing to middle school.

This course is an excellent option for:

  • Rising 5th graders who want a solid foundation in math to enter middle school math fully prepared.

  • Rising 6th graders experiencing challenges in Math who would benefit from stepping back one level to solidify essential skills, setting them up for success in Math 6 the following year.

At HEED, we view Math as the cornerstone of academic achievement throughout high school and beyond. Our goal is to equip every student with a solid foundation so they can approach middle and high school with confidence and readiness.

Successful completion of a Math 4 program

MATH 6 (NEW) Class meets in person on Wednesdays with an additional mandatory Zoom math class on Mondays.

Mrs. Shannon Sonsky

Course Description:

Saxon 7/6 teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts. Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 6/5, this Saxon 7/6 textbook introduces functions and coordinate graphing, integers, exponential expressions, and prime factorization. Students will specifically learn about the order of operations, number lines, decimal place value, finding the percent of a number, rounding decimal numbers, attributes of geometric solids, and more. The lessons include an introduction to the new concept, Lesson Practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and Mixed Practice exercises, which include 25-30 old and new problems. In-depth "Investigations" are provided every 10 lessons and include their own set of questions.

So, how will the week work? Wednesdays will consist of learning two or three weekly lessons, giving us more time to delve deeper into the new concept(s). All Lesson Practice problems will be done together, alleviating the need for this component at home. If time permits on Wednesday (which I’m sure it will), we can complete a math activity or game. Our Monday Zoom meetup will include the final one or two lessons of the week and completing the Lesson Practice sections together, with additional review time. Monday sessions will also give us time to review the difficult problems students encountered in the Mixed Practice sections. Students will actively complete the classwork on Zoom as they do in class.

The crucial component to the students’ math success will be their completion of ALL Mixed Practice problems. This will be done independently at home with a parent correcting their student’s work. Parents will also be responsible for ensuring that corrections are completed.

Parental Involvement:

Parents commit to personally proctor all tests. Parents must commit to checking homework and tests for proper completion and accuracy. This involves simply circling any question that has an incorrect or unreadable answer. Parents need to be involved in the process so they will know immediately if their student is having difficulty. Students are required to complete assigned daily work, which entails at least an hour a day. Proper completion of homework and tests involves neatly showing all work - not just answers. Students must correct the mistakes to prevent repeating the same error on future assignments. Students must remain current with class assignments and maintain a minimum 75% average, or risk being dropped from the class, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Students must never be in possession of the answer keys for tests!  All work must be the student's work, not copied from any answer key, solutions manual, or other student. Copying from any source for homework or tests is cheating and grounds for dismissal from HEED.

Short Videos will be provided for each lesson.

MATH 7 (NEW) Meets in person 2 Days a week, Monday & Wednesday

Course Description:

The Foundations for Pre-Algebra course begins with the concrete concepts of arithmetic processes and then builds the beginning framework for the abstract concepts of algebra.  Topics include: various operations with fractions, decimals and percents, order of operations, unit conversions, prime and composite numbers, area, perimeter and positive exponents.

Parental Involvement: Parents commit to personally proctor all tests.  Parents must commit to check homework and tests for proper completion and accuracy at the very least, weekly but preferably, daily.  This involves simply circling any question that has an incorrect or unreadable answer.  Parents do not need to understand the work; they just need to be involved in the process so they will know immediately if their student is having difficulty. Students are required to complete assigned daily work entailing a minimum of an hour a day.  Proper completion of homework and tests involves neatly showing all work - not just answers and not leaving blanks. Students must then correct the mistakes to prevent repetition of the same error on future assignments.  Students must remain current with the class assignments and maintain a minimum 75% average or risk being dropped from the class unless there are extenuating circumstances. Students must never be in possession of the answer keys for tests!  All work must be the student’s own work, not copied from any answer key or solutions manual or other student. Copying from any source for homework or tests is cheating and grounds for dismissal from HEED.
